ESB 110kV Framework Contract
(RoI)		 Contract for the refurbishment of existing 110kV live substations throughout Ireland. Work included the removal & retirement of existing equipment and installation and pre-commissioning of new HV switchgear, transformers, etc. Powerteam provided Person in Charge of Work (PICW), approved by ESB, to supervise work adjacent to live 110kV equipment under Permit for Work conditions. Scope of work covered the following:

  • Project management, including PSCS/PICW responsibility
  • 110kV, 38kV and 20kV outdoor bays including erection of steelwork, busbars, circuit breakers, disconnectors, CT’s, VT’s, surge arrestors, 110kV and 38kV transformers, neutral earthing resistors, capacitor banks and reactors plus associated cables and protection and control systems
  • 38kV indoor GIS switchboards including associated cables and protection and control systems
  • 20kV indoor switchboards including associated cables and protection and control systems
  • Earthing, telecoms and SCADA systems
  • Building services, fire and intruder alarm systems, battery systems and auxiliary supplies.
  • Testing & Pre-Commissioning to handover to ESB, and provision of commissioning assistance.
Projects completed included:
Kilmahud, Co. Dublin (for Microsoft plant) (2009):
  • 110kV HIS switchgear consisting of 2 x 110kV line bays, 2 x 100kV transformer bays and 1 x 110kV sectionaliser bay
Grangecastle, Co. Dublin (2009):
  • 110kV HIS switchgear consisting of 2 x 110kV line bays, 2 x 100kV transformer bays and 1 x 110kV sectionaliser bay
Adamstown (2008):
  • New 110/38kV substation using ABB outdoor GIS (PASS type)
Dardistown, Dublin Airport (2008):
  • 110kV HIS switchgear consisting of 2 x 110kV line bays, 2 x 100kV transformer bays and 1 x 110kV sectionaliser bay
Gortawee, Co. Cavan (2007-2008):
  • Installation of new 110/38kV transformer bay & related switchgear, including the installation of 110kV and 38kV surge arresters, 110kV neutral VT’s and 38kV changeover switch. Incorporating control cabling and protection units. Building services including fire and intruder detection systems

Scottish & Southern Energy (Scottish Hydro Electric) St Fergus
(Peterhead)		 Refurbishment of three 132kV substations and construction of one new 132kV substation.Scope of work includes:

  • Final substation civil and electrical design.
  • Procurement and installation of protection panels, busbars, marshalling kiosks, circuit breakers, disconnectors, landing gantry, multi coring, post insulators and chemical anchors.
  • Design, supply, install and commission two 132kV cable circuits and two fibre optic cables, including sealing structures. Design and install busbar protection schemes covering all St Fergus substation sites and integrating this with SSE’s Scada system.
  • Civil engineering work including equipment foundation support structures and cable trenches.
  • Electrical equipment commissioning and testing.
  • Earthing – design and installation of earth grids and connection of appropriate equipment.
  • Principal Contractor responsibility under CDM regulations.

 Removal of two 40-year old 30MVA 132kV transformers and the replacement of 7 bulk oil 132kV circuit breakers with 9 new circuit breakers. Repositioning of transformer bays and bus-bar layouts to reduce footprint area. Powerteam responsible for electrical & civil design including equipment procurement, installation and commissioning & foundation alterations, oil containment, cable tracks plus CDM responsibility. 2006-2007
